The columns of the Citicorp center couldn't be built on the city corners
because a church was planned to be built at the same location of the center
and the builders could go around the church and not interfere with the church
lot. The major flaw of the Citicorp building was that is was on stills that sat under the base of the building and the corners. The center has an unusually light mass of the building and that added it to be vulnerable to wind striking it corner, the chevron V's were bolted not welted together as should be. Citicorp was a disaster waiting to happen and there was a 1/16 chance that the prediction of the current weather during that time could knock the building down, which could cause the other buildings around it to fall like dominoes. An architectural student pointed out the flaw of the winds hitting the corner of the building, making it vulnerable to strong winds that could damage it. The students' identity never came out until recently. Lastly a writer named Joe heard about the story years later and published it in the New York Times, breaking it out to the public.
